People living in Bradley Stoke have spoken out at their frustrations due to overnight roadworks being carried out as part of plans to install a new cycle path.
The project, which began in the spring, is part of a two-year road improvement scheme and is expected to carry on until the end of 2026. The work includes the construction of separate cycle lanes and footpaths, installing improved bus stops, adding an additional priority bus lane and building pedestrian crossings.
Jess Ridge, who lives close to where the work is being undertaken, has said that the work is still going ahead at 2am and that even with the windows in her house closed she is still disturbed by the noise and “the whole house vibrates”.
She has two school-age children at home, and says the lack of sleep is beginning to affect their mental health.
In addition to the noise from machinery, disturbances are also coming from the flashing lights that are attached to the machinery to alert other road users to their presence, and from workers shouting instructions to each other.
Ms Ridge said that she and her neighbours feel there is a “lack of acknowledgement and empathy from the council”. She added: “They just don’t seem to care and we have to put up with another year of this.” The residents are asking for the council to show some sympathy and to keep work in more sociable hours only.
South Gloucestershire Council said it will “monitor the situation closely, making adjustments where possible to minimise the impact”.
