Make a difference this summer. South Gloucestershire Libraries are looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to join the team running the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, Story Garden.
Volunteers will spend their time supporting children to do the Summer Reading Challenge, talking with them about the books they’re reading and helping at a range of fun activities in the library. This is a great opportunity to develop skills in communication, team working and creative projects, while having fun and making new friends.
Previous Summer Reading Challenge volunteers say: “I love talking with the children about the books they have read and seeing them progress through the challenge. Volunteering has been a really rewarding experience for me and a big confidence booster. All the library staff are always friendly and approachable which has made the library a lovely place to come and volunteer at over the summer.”
Another former volunteer said: “Volunteering has been a fun and positive way to spend my Saturdays. Feeling like I’m making a difference in the community improves my wellbeing.”
The theme for this year’s Challenge is Story Garden meaning adventures in nature and the great outdoors, exploring the magical connection between storytelling and nature. Children aged four to 11-years-old take part by reading books they enjoy over the summer holiday to collect stickers and rewards.
The closing date for applications to volunteer is 22 June. Volunteers must be aged 14 years or over. For more information, ask a member of staff at any South Gloucestershire library, email libraryvolunteers@southglos.gov.uk or visit southglos.gov.uk/library-volunteers
